After the ride with KLMHunt last week I am in the market for a nice set of rain gear. I have found a few sets on Ebay but know nothing about them. I have always used very large rain parkas but they would not be the best for riding. What are the other big guys on this site using? Looking for something with plenty of room to move. I typically wear 2-3xl but would like something is 4-5xl (bacause it will have to fit over anyting else I have on). I want to have plenty of room to move, just in case I need to bail. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

I'm a jacket, pants, and rubber boot fan. Cheaper the better since I ride woods and mud, zippers usually go before they tear but I can't see spending a fortune on rain gear.

JJJ,
That is what I am after. Something like Frog Togs or this on Ebay. I have rain gear for hunting but that is much heavier than needed for this time of year. Just looking for what some other big guys might be using. Anything would be better than what Kevin and myself had on the last trip. We both forgot to take anything. We were wet in places that should only get wet while swimming or bathing.

What are the things one should look for in a pretty good suite? What material, brand, etc?
Thanks
David

Dav this is a great canadian company and sell some really nice raingear. i ride with the wetskins pants with a pair off flannel cartharts under neath. my jacket is a viking that is totatly water proof, both in sizes 2XL.rubber boots are off high grade with woolen inserts.. this rain gear outwear did cost some money but will last for a while and if you are riding and get caught in heavy rain you want to prepared. i find the cheap pvc rian gear with wear on your plastic and dull it. plus they are not very warm . this is my opinion ..good luck..GC

Use the above link for good quality "work" rain gear. I have always been happy with their products.

I have the frogg Toggs and they work great. I like the way they don't feel like you have rubber next to your skin. Buy at least one size larger than you think, the pants are a little tight when sliding around riding. They stuff into a sack that fits in the recess of my rear box toward the seat and doubles as a back support.

I like the new Supporting member logos!

I recently bought a set from the local Fleet Farm for 24.99. My friends wore the same setup on our last rainy run. These guys are big dudes. The 2 piece suits worked great. Driflex PVC/Nylon. They come in the 5x sizes. Check out www.stearnsinc.com

Stearn makes some very nice stuff, but you will pay,but in late fall it is nice and warm yet will keep you dry. Columbia also makes some nice rain pants.Anything with Gore-Tex is good also.make sure the pants are extra long for when you sit down! Hey riding in the rain is fun as long as you stay dry,if not you can be damp and cold not fun!

I go to Mills fleet farm as well 13.99 for a blue and green 2 peice suit. and it comes with a mesh bag. I leave it in my bag till i need it. if it gets ripped or torn just throw it away and by another.

i seen in a atv catalog i got free a pair of pants with booties built in so you are totally waterproof from the waist down. it may get hot but would be ideal in strictly mud applications. i cant think of the catalog...sorrry ( but the pants were like 99 bucks and jacket was 60

For me it's Hefty garbage bags. They make a awesome parka. Still leave plenty of room for outer clothes and you can buy a box of 30 for 5 bucks (40 gallon)! Leave'em in the rack bag and they're always there. And the best part...........One size fits all.

Dave

I purchased a set of Columbia Fishing Rain Gear this spring. It cost me about $70.00 on sale. I got the 2X size and it fits big. I have no problem wearing jeans and heavy sweatshirt underneath.

Thanks for the info guys.
I have tried on the Frogg Togg's in a 2x, they fit me but were way to short. The paints and the jacket were both way on the short side and the paints were a little tight while seated. My being 6' 4" and 360 pounds makes it hard to pull things off the shelf and it work for me. I can't find the Frogg Togg's in stock larger than the 2x and if the larger sizes and not longer it still would not work for me.
I have noticed a couple of guys that said they were around my size and was thinking they may have suggestions or experience with this. I want the larger size for more comfort and the option of use later in the year when more clothes might be needed. Like I said the big plastic parka has worked in the past and the trash bag is better than nothing. I am just looking for something a little more comfortable than the PVC / plastic / trash bag type of protection. I would almost rather get wet from rain than be steamed from the inside of the plastic. I guess I could order a couple of different sets but I just hate to send things back.

Thanks
David

Dav, I too am 6'3" and about 300lbs. I wear Helly Hansen yellow PVC type raingear. However the set I bought the PVC stuff is thick and very pliable even when it gets below zero. I purchased mine in Vancouver, BC at a Mark's WorkWear House. The set I ordered in 3xl in 1997 has not ripped, got any holes nor have any buttons fell or ripped off. It sits behind my seat in the truck and out in the garage all winter. When I ordered it I was told it was Industrial strength, these are the ones fisherman and crabbers wear out at sea. They were $70 a piece. A little pricey but 9 years later they are as good as gold. This is the jacket I bought

Heavy weighted PVC multi-coated cotton, for durability and comfort. Resistant to most chemicals, oil, grease, acids, saltwater, sunlight and mildew. The multi-coated PVC won't peel, crack or become sticky and stays flexible down to -25C.
Style# P300 X; P300 Helly Hansen $69.99 currently

Great idea David! I hadn't thought about starting a thread about this. I will probably just keep my cheap pvc/plastic rain suit with my riding gear from now on. Hopefully, I won't need to use it often. But with my luck who knows? I would be interested in a cheap rain suit that would "breath" better than the pvc though. As a side note, my wife did tell me to take rain gear on our trip, but I told her since there wasn't a cloud in the sky at our house I didn't need it. Boy, I'm still hearing about that from her! I hate it when she is right and I'm wrong.

Today I received my Toadz by FroggToggs, ToadSkinz Bib / pants. $57 delivered from Ebay.

My Gortex pants (my Gortex jacket, the same age is fine) were beginning to leak and the suspenders I used kept falling off...new rain gear was over do.

ToadSkinz Bib

Time will tell how well they keep me dry. Hopefully no more wet butts when snow plowing with the Rancher.

I luv the two huge pouch like pockets with velcro flaps.

One review that I read: Wished the main zipper went lower to make releaving yourself easier...I agree...but the quick large release clip on the suspenders do help you lower them easily...you would have to unzip your jacket though.

The sizing chart called for me to order a large pair...but instead I went with XL and glad that I did.

I tested the FroggToggs (above) riding my Rancher through at least 40 miles of rain and waves of water splashing up from large puddles on the trail a few weeks ago....water did find it's way inside sooner or later.

I wasn't completely soaked inside but wet for sure. Long story short.

I think the sitting down position allows water to pool and eventually get through the seems rather than quickly run off the material if you were standing.

http://www.bigbadpowersports.com/product/2854-0006/Alpinestars-RJ-5-Rain-Jacket-Black-3X---320455-11-3X.html

Think I got mine from rocky mountain 2 1/2 years ago. Same pull over no lettering down the arm.
this site also list the pant for 39.99 (Don't own them)
Alpinestars Rp-5 Rain Pants Black 3X - 322455-11-3X
Item #2855-0014

I am 6' 5" 330lbs and it fits.

I wear Moose racing water proof riding pants during the summer and Walls bib overalls in the winter.
I find that with the riding pants and coveralls a little extra water proofing doesn't hurt.

"Atsko" silicone water-guard is effective.
The can I am holding is older and I paid 5.99 at trader horn.

About 1/4 full and I did the crotch of my bibs and re sprayed my moose pants after I washed them. x2 applications.
(BIG MISTAKE NEVER WASH "WATERPROOF" PANTS / WASHES AWAY THE WATERPROOFING)

I wear the carhartt rain gear jacket and pants. Very durable a little spendy but worth the money. They work excellent have not been wet yet.
